I have always wrote reports by hand and was very sceptical when our school said we had to word process all our reports, as a very slow typer I thought it would be a nightmare. It truly was a nightmare as we were all given a word processing template that was a pain to use. As an ICT teacher I knew that it could be done better via a database so I set up my own using Microsoft Access. All was well but it was difficult to use no features etc. so I decided to contact 3 Square whom had written databases for our school. I asked them about producing a report writing database for our school, so they did. I now use it all the time in our department whilst other departments are still using the word processing template. I get my reports done in less than half the time of the other teachers, and they look far more professional. I do get other heads of departments asking me about it and a few of them complained saying things like "you cant just use a drop down list to write reports" and "its not personal" but when we sat down and looked at the reports mine were far better and a lot more personal and took less time too. All agreed that using report writer is far better an they are using it. I just think some people are afraid of change, like I was at the beginning. But this is one teaching tool that myself and other staff cannot live without.

I started out as a supply teacher and was using the SMART School Lesson Planner to plan my lessons. That was a great time saving tool but Report Writer is even better, I can get a full class reports done in around ten minutes. The amount of time I save by using Report Writer is amazing, I simply would not write my reports in any other way. The interface is well designed and it is so easy to use. I am about to start a new job in another school and am planning on using Report Writer and Lesson Planner to ease the burden of work. I recently got some custom made reports from the SMART School team and they were great, exactly what I wanted. I know I will probably have to get some more designed to fit in with my new school but it is well worth the cost for the amount of time I will save.
